Similar in design to the smaller version, the figure of the Madonna is shown wearing the simple dress and shawl of a fishergirl. She is young and is imagined as standing on the shore looking out to sea while buffeted by the wind. The Christ Child is fast asleep and held safe in her arms, protected from the elements by her shawl.

The wind symbolises the hardships they will both endure.
