Saint Columba (Colmcille) was born in Donegal, Ireland, in 521. His stated aim to become a “Pilgrim for God” brought him to Scotland in the middle of the 6th Century, where many of the Picts had yet to be introduced to christianity. He founded at least four monastic communities, with Iona becoming a centre for Christian life in Scotland and the north of England.
The figure of the Saint, wearing simple Celtic robes, carries a plain cross. His tonsure is the Celtic kind with the hair shaved across the top of the head.
