Saint Cuthbert

Saint Cuthbert was a 7th Century saint from Northumbria. He ministered to scattered communities between Berwick and Galloway, which at the time was part of Northumbria, then retired to the desolate Farne Islands off the Northumberland coast. Cuthbert lived there until 684 when he was called to be bishop at Lindisfarne. He was noted for his holiness and charm and was referred to as the “child of God” by the Venerable Bede.

The figure shows the saint as a young man meditating by the sea, accompanied by the otters of legend.
