Saint John Ogilvie (1579 – 1615) was born in Drumnakeith, which was an estate in Banffshire, Scotland. He was educated abroad and returned to Scotland in 1613 to serve as a missionary priest, which he did clandestinely until his arrest and execution in Glasgow.
The sculpture shows the saint carrying a crucifix as a symbol of his mission to take Christ to the people. He is wearing the secular clothes he used to resemble a horse trader, a disguise he adopted in his travels about the country.
