Not much is known about the life of Saint Ninian. Saint Bede mentions him briefly in his “Historia Ecclesiastica” written in AD 731. He describes Saint Ninian as a historical figure who is said to have brought Christianity to the southern Picts of Scotland. This predates Saint Columba, who arrived in AD 565 to convert the Picts of the north. Saint Ninian was said to be a Celt who studied in Rome, where he was consecrated as a Bishop.
He returned home as a missionary and built one of the first stone churches in Scotland, the Candida Casa in Whithorn.
