Victoire Larmenier (1827 – 1878) – known as Mother Saint Basil – was born in Liffré in France. In 1851 she moved to Paris to join The Little Sisters of the Poor. Later the same year she was sent with four sisters to start a new group working among the poor in London, and she soon became the Superior of this community. A convent was set up in Hammersmith, opening in 1857, which Victoire Larmenier named Nazareth House. In 1864 the new order was given the title of the Congregation of the Poor Sisters of Nazareth.
This is the final sculpture produced by Anne Davidson, who completed the clay model shortly before her death in December 2008.
