Saint Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru, in 1579. He was the son of a Spanish Grandee and a freed African slave. His childhood was spent in poverty.
He was accepted into the Dominican Order, first as a servant, then as a lay brother. He was a herbalist and doctor and many miracles were attributed to him during and after his life.
The sculpture shows him sitting at his workbench, still able to devote time to prayer and meditation.
